We have all done it. We reach a point of frustration whether it’s the jeans that are too tight, the weekend indulgence in chocolate cake, the Friday night wings and beer, or shopping with a friend and not finding anything that fits. We have a serious intervention with ourselves that sounds something like… “this is enough, we have enjoyed this for too long. This is ridiculous and it has to stop. That’s it! Starting Monday, I will go to the gym…. stop eating chocolate…..eat only cabbage soup…..buy that diet book my friend is doing….eat more fat….eat less sugar….stop drinking….and the list goes on and on.
Why wait for Monday? What’s so magical about Monday? Most people hate Mondays and I assume that mainly it’s because it signifies the start of the week. So why do we wait for Monday? Does waiting for Monday actually work? The consensus is that waiting for Monday does not work at all. It somehow gives us permission to continue doing what takes us away from our wellness goals to begin with. If I’m off course on Friday with pizza and beer and I aim to start a new program on Monday, that leaves me with Saturday and Sunday to continue with my pizza and beer path. And we all know what the internal chatter is, it sounds something like this…. “I already blew it with pizza so I might as well order that cheesecake and tomorrow I will eat that lasagna that’s in the freezer”.
Waiting for Monday is a set up and creates a mindset of perfection which sounds like “if I can’t do it perfectly, then I can’t do it at all”. We are surrounded by this mindset from nutrition to exercise to work to the roles we have. This mindset doesn’t allow for mistakes or moderation or learning what triggers derail you from your goals. Waiting for Monday only puts off for tomorrow what you can do today.
Why not start today? Yes, today. In this moment in time, when you are thinking about what you want for yourself and when you are the most connected to the goals you want to achieve. Why not take the step today? To have the most success in achieving your wellness goals, you must be courageous and brave and take that step right now. Don’t wait until Monday, today is a good day to take a step towards the you that you’ve always wanted to be.
