3 Reasons why weight loss shouldn’t be your only focus

Browsing at Home Sense is something that brings me joy. There is something therapeutic in it for me. I love looking at all the décor choices and imaging how I can make it work in my home or at the office. With a Starbucks in hand, I wonder around and find that I can lose hours in that place.  During my browsing in the pillow section, I overheard a conversation between two women who knew each other and were catching up after the holidays. After the quick check-in on how the holidays went, they launched into their weight loss resolutions for 2018 and began pointing out what they hated about their bodies and how this is the year that they are going to lose that 20-30lbs! Hearing this made me sad and reflective on how weight loss has become about hating our bodies enough to create change instead of looking at the bigger picture of health and wellness. Here are 3 reasons to focus beyond weight loss.

You are more than your weight

How many times have you stood on a scale and held your breath for the magic number to appear. Hoping that it will be smaller than last time and dread it if it’s bigger. As if the gravitational pull on our bodies will determine our personal worth as a human being on this planet. Our weight has taken so much power away from measuring other means of health and we put all our hopes and dreams into a number that doesn’t really mean anything at all. Does your weight determine who you are? Are you a different person if you lose 5lbs? Does your weight determine compassion? Empathy? Joy? No, it doesn’t

Other measures of health

Your weight and weight loss is only ONE measure that we tend to focus on. But the reality is that there are many other measures of health. At the clinic, we are bombarded with reports of improved health that has NOTHING to do with a number on the scale. How do you sleep? What is your energy level like? How easily can you focus on tasks? How do you feel at the end of your work day? How active are you? How much pain does your body feel today? Start measuring other things to determine your health

Health is a mindset

Have you met someone and thought “that person looks great! I wish I could look like that!”. Did you know that there is a 90% chance that that “perfect” person doesn’t like their looks either? Health and wellness is a mindset, how you view the world and your role in it. The most drastic change for me is realizing that I not only accept my body, but I am grateful for all that it does for me. And that it may not be perfect and that is more than okay. I am not here to be perfect, I am here to fulfill my purpose as best as possible and that does not entail having a perfect body at a perfect weight. I will gain weight with PMS, I will lose weight randomly, I will crave steak and love each bite of it, I will find joy in all the amazing sleep I get, and I will climb a mountain because my body is healthy enough to do that and much more.
